How To Beat Burnout For Greater Productivity

Many high performance people suffer from burnout at some time in their life. It just seems to creep up on them. When it does, it stifles their productivity and generally makes their life miserable. So it can be quite debilitating.

Here are some tips to help you cope with this situation

Recognising you are suffering from burnout.

You need to identify the symptoms that signal this condition. This way, you at least know how to react, and may even be able to prevent it. So this is the most important tip. Many people just slide into an apathetic mood, loose all their joy for living and may end up depressed. Recognise the symptoms, to nip this in the bud.

Often burnout is caused by trying to take on everyone else’s issues.

To cope, you need to focus on your own tasks. If you are always trying to help everyone else with their problems, you will get overwhelmed.

Generally being the go-to person in a business, is a sure sign that you are prone to this.

Remember that helping people is likely someone’s business somewhere.

There are complete businesses set up, just to take care of even the most trivial problems. These are often professionals and can usually do a better job than you.

Additionally, if you keep on trying to help everyone, you will become ineffective after a while and not be able to help anyone anymore.

Don’t neglect your own problems as a coping mechanism.

Ignoring problems generally does not make them go away. In fact most problems get worse if left alone. Deal with your issues as quickly and promptly as possible.

Letting them fester and build up, will only contribute to your burnout. They will keep on churning around in your brain, leading to worry and stress. This can lead to total inaction due to denial.

 Exercise for stress reduction.

You are probably aware that some physical exercise has been proven to reduce stress in your body. Since stress is a major contributor to burnout, it makes sense to alleviate it as much as possible.

A regular exercise routine can be an important asset in your battle against burnout. An exercise routine usually takes you out of your common surroundings.

Physical motion is also necessary to eliminate waste at a cellular level from your body. It does this by means of the lymphatic system, which absolutely needs movement to operate.

Eliminating waste stops toxin buildup, which also negatively affects your mood.

The production of certain “feel good” hormones is also stimulated through exercise. It does not have to even be strenuous. Just something is better than nothing.

Having goals clarifies your situation.

If you are just showing up at your job without any definite plan of action or process to follow, this can lead you to burnout.

You have no idea as to whether anything you do is really significant.

Having a strategy and routine to work to helps in this regard.

Possibly confer with your superiors regarding their expectations and visions and then devise a list together with them.

Modifying your career might help.

Are you in the right career?

The career you chose all those years ago, might be getting stale now

No matter what you try, the same issues keep coming up, and you are applying the same efforts to resolve them and be productive. It may be prudent to consider a career change or modification.

Often this is not possible, so consider an environmental change. A new direction in your career. Or changing employers or locations.

Here staying stagnant, often produces a negative effects as over time it dulls your mind. An active mind is always happier.

Socialize more, get out there.

At heart we are social creatures.

A long time ago, our survival depended on us being able to rally together to protect each other to thrive and survive. Modern technology allows us to completely shun any interaction with our fellow human beings.

At the root level, there is still a need to interact with others. This can be at work or socially.

Integration is programmed into our genes, it was a survival mechanism that shaped our civilization over thousands of years. We can’t just shut it off.

Isolation, dampens your thinking and leads to unrealistic reality perceptions, causing mood swings.

These in turn all add up to pushing you toward burnout.

So some action steps to consider taking:

Option1:Change of Scenery:

There is a saying that a change is as good as a holiday. So why not do both. Take a vacation, or mini vacation- away from home.

There is a reason that companies send their employees to retreats for team building and such exercises.

It is designed to freshen the mind. They are able to take in new perspectives, have different outlooks and hopefully be more productive. Relaxing and giving your mind a break, also stops the churning of the common thoughts that are actually causing a rut and leading to burnout

Option2:Understand the why you are doing what you are doing.

Lay out action steps. Follow a daily routine that will move you along the direction of those steps.

This will streamline your daily activities and your life. There is more clarity, to avoid the confusion leading to burnout.

Option3:Pamper yourself physically.

This might be regular spa visits, with massages and therapies, dedicated nutrition plans and detoxing regiments.

Enjoy specialised

or different foods.

If this is outside your budget, or you a time constrained, pamper yourself at home.

It is amazing the difference a hot relaxing bath can make.

Sit down, and force yourself to disconnect from the outside world, even if just for an hour a day.

Put on some music, and let your mind refresh itself.

Make this a daily ritual. Something that is not difficult or a strain.
